Discover the Benefits of Pilates and the Reformer in Paisley

As the Pilates reformer grows in popularity, you may have seen photos or videos of this odd-looking machine. The hype surrounding it at the moment may be making you curious, but what is it, and what is it actually for? Contrary to popular belief, the Pilates reformer or “reformer Pilates”, as it often gets called, isn’t some newfound strain of Pilates. It’s actually been around for many decades since Pilates was invented. While it’s not new, it could very well be your new and effective way to improve your strength, flexibility, and overall well-being! If you’re looking for a safe, effective, and amazing way to improve your body, then trying the reformer in Paisley could be just for you.
What is the Pilates reformer?
The Pilates reformer is one of the original exercise machines invented by Joseph Pilates. With adjustable springs and a sliding carriage, the reformer helps you perform controlled movements that engage your core, build muscle tone, and improve posture. Unlike mat-based Pilates, the reformer provides support and resistance, making it suitable for all fitness levels—including complete beginners! In fact, traditionally, the reformer is the first piece of equipment Pilates teachers will introduce a client to. The reason is that the reformer provides a lot of support and feedback to the body, which will help you to progress in your Pilates practice. In Pilates, we always want to move in a controlled and flowing manner, and the movement of the reformer carriage provides feedback so you can gain that control.
Why Try the Pilates Reformer?
Many people can be nervous to join a Pilates class for the first time. They worry that they won’t know what to do or perhaps they won’t be able to do the exercises. Having a private lesson with me on the reformer takes all that noise of worrying about others away, and we can work together on you and your goals. The reformer not only can make exercises more challenging, but it can actually assist and support the body in performing exercises that you may find difficult to achieve without. This allows you to grow stronger and gain mobility safely, and before you know it, you won’t even need the reformer to practice Pilates. Although you certainly will still love it! You can also progress to using the other more advanced pieces of equipment, like the Wunda chair, which uses the same spring system but is smaller than the reformer and very challenging and fun! Here are just a few benefits of working on the Pilates reformer.
- Gentle on Joints – The smooth, controlled movements reduce strain on your joints, making it a great option for those recovering from injuries or looking for a safe way to build strength and flexibility.
- Improves Posture & Core Strength – The reformer helps to strengthen your core muscles, which play a key role in maintaining good posture and preventing back pain. It also provides better body awareness, and you’ll discover things about your body you never noticed.
- Enhances Flexibility & Balance – Regular sessions can help you move more freely and with greater ease in your daily activities. The moving of the carriage can also be used to do some amazing balance challenging exercises, which of course will improve your balance.
- Boosts Mind-Body Connection – Pilates encourages mindful movement and breath control, helping to reduce stress and improve focus. Joseph Pilates spoke of the mind body connection often, and as someone who regularly practices Pilates, I can tell you it does wonders to declutter the mind.
What to Expect during your Reformer lesson in Paisley with me
If you’re new to the Pilates reformer, don’t worry—I’ll make sure you feel confident and enjoy your first session. In fact, I make it my mission for all clients to leave each lesson feeling taller and happier. First of all, I’ll introduce the machine to you and give you an overview of how it works. I’ll then more than likely start you doing exercises where you lie on the reformer; this way, your back is completely supported, and you can get used to how the reformer moves. You’ll love these types of exercises! One beauty of the Pilates reformer is how you can do all sorts of exercises to work and stretch your body, all while lying on your back! We would then progress to seated exercises, which offer a new challenge and the opportunity to get some fun movement. Once you’ve gained confidence and control, we can then progress you to kneeling and even standing exercises! Your Pilates journey is one to truly enjoy, and with each week, you’ll grow so keen to practice more.
